Solar Panel Payback in the UK (2026)

UK solar is a genuinely good investment, but it works differently from the American market that most online calculators are built around. There is no 30% tax credit, no net metering, and far less sunlight. What the UK does have is expensive electricity β and that, rather than any subsidy, is what drives the return.
1. There is no UK solar grant
This surprises people, so it is worth stating plainly. For most households there is no capital grant for rooftop solar in Great Britain. What exists is 0% VAT on qualifying residential installations until 31 March 2027 under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6. That is real money β roughly a fifth off what the job would otherwise cost β but installer quotes are already VAT-free, so it is an avoided cost, not a discount you subtract from the quote you were given.
Any calculator that shows you a UK βrebateβ being deducted from your quoted price is double-counting. Scotland is the notable exception: Home Energy Scotland offers an interest-free loan of up to Β£6,000, which lowers your financing cost rather than the system price.
2. The Smart Export Guarantee pays far less than you are charged
Great Britain has no net metering. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, licensed suppliers must pay you for surplus electricity you export β but at roughly 10β15p/kWh against an import price nearer 27p/kWh. A kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth roughly twice a kilowatt-hour you export.
This single fact is the most common reason UK payback estimates come out wrong. If a calculator credits every unit you generate at the full import tariff, it will tell you the system pays back in five years when the realistic answer is nine to eleven. Our model assumes about 45% self-consumption for a household without a battery and values the remaining 55% at the SEG rate.
3. Sunlight: 2.5 to 3.1 peak hours, not 4+
Peak sun hours are not daylight hours. They are the equivalent hours of full-rated output your panels receive across a year. Southern England averages around 3.1 per day; Scotland around 2.5. A great many calculators quote UK figures above 4, which inflates annual generation by a third or more before any financial assumption is even applied.
4. What that means by region
Import tariffs vary by Ofgem distribution region, and irradiance falls as you move north. The table below models an 8 kW system on our current dataset:

Notice that the tariff spread across regions is small while the sunlight spread is large. In the UK, where you live affects your payback mainly through irradiance, not price β the opposite of the United States, where tariffs vary by more than a factor of two between states.
5. How to improve your return
- Shift consumption into daylight. Dishwasher, washing machine and EV charging on timers is the cheapest way to raise self-consumption, and every point you add is worth roughly twice an exported unit.
- Consider a battery carefully. It raises self-consumption to 70%+ but adds capital cost; it improves return only if your tariff spread justifies it.
- Shop the SEG rate. Export tariffs differ substantially between suppliers, and you are not obliged to export to whoever supplies your import.
- Install before March 2027 if the 0% VAT window matters to your budget.
